Contribution margin is what remains from each sale after variable costs: selling price per unit minus variable cost per unit. That remainder “contributes” first toward covering fixed costs, and — once fixed costs are fully covered — becomes pure profit.
It’s the denominator of the break-even formula and the key lever in pricing decisions: small price increases flow entirely into contribution margin.
