Principal is the core amount — the sum you borrow on a loan or the amount you invest, as distinct from the interest it generates. On an amortized loan, each payment splits between interest (charged on the remaining principal) and principal reduction.
Extra payments applied to principal are the most powerful way to cut a loan’s total cost, because every future interest charge is calculated on the smaller balance.
