Escrow is an arrangement where a neutral third party holds funds until conditions are met. In home buying, the buyer’s deposit sits in escrow until closing. After closing, many mortgage servicers maintain an escrow account: part of each monthly payment accumulates there to pay property taxes and homeowners insurance when they come due.
That’s why a real monthly housing payment is often described as PITI — principal, interest, taxes and insurance.
