Equity is ownership value: the asset’s worth minus the debt against it. A home worth $400,000 with a $250,000 mortgage balance has $150,000 of equity. In business, equity is assets minus liabilities — the shareholders’ claim on the company.
Home equity grows two ways: paying down the mortgage principal and appreciation of the property’s market value. It can often be borrowed against through home equity loans or lines of credit.
