Chandigarh: As many as 40 renal (kidney) transplants are on the waiting list for January at P.G.I. owing to medical issues with recipients and financial constraints of recipients, according to a reply to an RTI Application filed by TOI.

It takes anywhere between two and four weeks for investigations prior to matching donor and recipient. On the other hand, the internal scrutiny committee (ISC) the final approver for such transplant surgeries has not been meeting often. Sources said the nephrology department There has been delay in referring patients for surgery. Last year, 201 kidneys were transplanted and 187 in 2021.

“The waiting list is due to the ISC not being constituted for a while. It had been taking pending cases and others were being added to the waiting list. The nephrology department had also not been sending the cases due to unknown reasons,” said a faculty member. However, doctors from the nephrology department have refuted the claims.

For a transplant, the living donor should not be suffering from any major diseases like diabetes and cancer.
